BACKGROUND: Three bureaus within the Maine Department of Conservation (DOC) shared a common dilemma. Each receives many phone calls from the public requesting location-specific information, and yet funding the necessary level of service can be challenging in these days of careful budgeting. The bureaus recognized the power of the Internet in disseminating information and decided to pool their resources and create a single website to serve each of their needs.

| SOLUTION: The end result is a single website with individual mapping pages for each bureau. Cost savings using this approach came from sharing a single entry point, using a similar layout design for each page, and accessing a single set of basemap data used in conjunction with the common mapping functions.
Now, the Land Use Regulation Commission offers a parcel finder, the Maine Forest Service has a sawmill locator, and the Maine Geological Survey offers a publication search tool.
