Recent Whale Sightings Internet Mapping Site
CLIENT: Large Whale Take Reduction Program, Maine Dept. of Marine Resources
SOFTWARE: ArcIMS
URL: http://megisims.state.me.us/whalesightings

BACKGROUND: The Maine Large Whale Take Reduction Program is responsible for developing strategies to limit whale mortality due to fishing gear entanglements in Maine's coastal waters. One way to mitigate conflicts between whales and gear is to provide fishermen with accurate, up-to-date information on whale sightings. When fishermen know where concentrations of whales are they can take steps, such as moving gear, to reduce the chances of a whale entanglement. The question is "How to cost-effectively inform fisherman about current sightings?"

SOLUTION: The Whale Sighting Page is designed to display historical and contemporary locations of Right whales and other species in state and federal waters off coastal Maine. The site provides coordinates and other information such as the number and behavior of whales, which is reported by a variety of observers including whale watch boats, harbor pilots, fishermen and ferry boat captains. Fishermen can quickly get a detailed view of specific fishing zones they frequent. The Whale Sighting Page is popular not only with fishermen but the general public and is helping to facilitate awareness of the distribution of whales. The data gathered will aid in the development of future management options to reduce conflicts between fisheries and whales.
