National Marine Fisheries Service Trawl Survey Project Begins

GLOUCESTER, MA. - Northern Geomantics has begun work on an ArcIMS web site for a National Marine Fisheries Service trawl survey research project. The project's main goals are to obtain fine-scale survey data on distribution and demographics of cod and yellowtail flounder in the Gulf of Maine and Southern New England waters.

Northern Geomantics role will be to create a centralized mapping site so participating research organizations, fishery managers and fisherman can easily access the survey data soon after collection. The IMS site will display the location of completed surveys with summary data in near real-time. More detailed survey information, such as reproductive status, age, and size distributions will be available after the raw survey data has been processed by NMFS staff at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Web site users can also select surveys based on management area, bottom sediment type or water depth and create graphs from the selected survey data.

The NMFS Trawl Survey project is scheduled to be completed by June of 2004.
