Planning Field Visits with ArcIMS and ArcWeb Services
HALLOWELL, ME - Northern Geomantics is currently developing several enhancements to the Public Water Resources ArcIMS site owned by the Maine Drinking Water Program (MDWP.) NGI developed the original site with the goal of making public water information easily accessible to the general public. The site has been a great success, with many positive public comments on its usefulness.
In addition to being a popular public site, the MDWP staff have also found the site increasingly useful and frequently use it to locate wells and intakes for planned field visits. After locating the points of interest, staff turn to a paper atlas for trip planning. At best, this process is inefficient. The problem is solved in the enhanced site, however, which sports an integrated trip planning tool. Staff will locate the necessary wells, intakes, and addresses and plan their trip routes through a single online tool, saving time and effort in the process.
NGI's solution uses ArcWeb Services for address matching and routing. The subscription-based service is a perfect fit for the project, as it allows MDWP to integrate the new functionality with a minimal investment of time and money. Users, logged into the site with staff privileges, are presented with a new set of tools to search for and add wells, intakes and addresses to a trip's itinerary. This trip information, stored in a database, is accessible at any time for modification and/or to generate driving directions. The trip planning tool is seamlessly integrated with the interactive mapping of the ArcIMS site.
Other site enhancements include design and cartographic updates, new administrative functions and usage reports, and additional basemap and environmental datasets. The final updates were completied in October, 2004.
